ABC News reports that Saman Hasnain was charged with 19 felony counts of conspiracy to commit grand theft. Her husband, Jawad, faces nine additional counts. According to the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office, the couple lured homeowners in the San Jose, Calif., metropolitan area with advertisements promising refinanced mortgages. The district attorney's office adds that between 80 and 100 homeowners fell for the Hasnains' ruse, and several victims wound up losing their homes.
Hasnain – who won the 2008 Mrs. Pakistan World beauty pageant and later became an independent film producer – and her husband left the U.S. for Pakistan last month. The U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with Pakistan, making it unlikely that they will be returned to face charges.
