One of the most prominent landmarks of the New York City skyline has become the latest symbol of the green building movement.

According to combined media sources, the Chrysler Building has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The certification follows a two-year project by the building's owner, Tishman Speyer Properties, to upgrade the energy, water maintenance, and waste systems in the 1.2 million square-foot building. As a result of the upgrades, the building is expected to see its water consumption drop by 64% and its energy usage decline by 21% while 81% of the building’s waste gets recycled.

Noted for its distinctive Art Deco design, the Chrysler Building opened in 1930 and was the world's tallest office tower until completion of the Empire State Building in 1931. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
